Kyiv plans to begin construction of several backup crossings across the Dnieper next week in case of bridge damage. They are also considering the possibility of building a tunnel under the river in the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Minister of Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine, Mykola Kalashnyk, noted that the main priority is to strengthen the existing bridge infrastructure and protect it from attacks. At the same time, in the event of damage to the bridges, they plan to provide an alternative connection between the left and right banks of Kyiv.<\/p>\n

“The immediate solutions are a dam and a pontoon crossing, which are being built quickly. This work has already begun,” Kalashnik said.<\/p>\n

The project will involve the ministry, the Reconstruction Agency, the military, and the capital’s authorities. Construction of the crossings could take up to 3 months, and their capacity should be at least half that of the existing bridges.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, an average of about 600,000 cars pass through Kyiv’s bridges during the day. Appropriate locations have already been identified for backup crossings.<\/p>\n

Such work is planned not only in Kyiv and not only on the Dnieper. Among other options, precast concrete structures are also being considered.<\/p>\n

In the long term, the ministry is considering building a tunnel under the Dnieper. According to Kalashnyk, such infrastructure projects can cost tens of billions of hryvnias, so their implementation requires attracting investments, donors, and international partners.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the primary task remains to protect existing bridges from damage. Kalashnik noted that the maximum amount of equipment has been involved for this, and the work involves protecting bridges, their rapid restoration, and creating backup infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Recall that the Russians used a jet drone to strike the Northern Bridge in Kyiv<\/a> , which connects the right and left banks of the Dnieper River. Two people were injured<\/a> as a result of the Russian strike.<\/p>\n

Earlier, on the night of October 2, Russian troops again attacked the Southern Bridge in Kyiv<\/a> . A 25-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district was also damaged as a result of the enemy strike.<\/p>\n
