In July and August alone, more than 176,000 tons of petroleum products, mostly diesel fuel, were shipped to Russia.

This is reported by The Guardian, which analyzed port records and data on ship movements.

According to the publication, the fuel was loaded at several ports in South Korea onto seven tankers that made 14 voyages to the Russian Far East .

Three of the seven vessels were under sanctions by the United Kingdom and the European Union.

In particular, the sanctions tanker Layla made two voyages from Ulsan to Vladivostok and transported a total of about 57 thousand tons of diesel fuel .

During one of the voyages, the ship indicated Niigata, Japan, as its destination, although it was actually headed for Russia. In another case, the cargo was transferred from one ship to another directly at sea, making it difficult to track the fuel’s route.

Supplies from South Korea have increased amid problems in the Russian oil refining industry following Ukrainian strikes on refineries.

According to the data provided by the publication, Russia’s oil refining capacity has fallen to its lowest level in 20 years , and diesel fuel production has decreased by about 30% .

In August, Russia imported 368,000 tons of petroleum products by sea, a record since the start of the full-scale war. About 31% of this volume came from supplies from South Korea.

At the same time, the deliveries themselves, according to The Guardian, do not necessarily violate South Korean law. However, the use of vessels subject to British and European sanctions raises questions about the effectiveness of sanctions control.

It was previously reported that Russia, due to fuel shortages, is increasing imports of gasoline and diesel through third countries . According to the GUR, South Korea was among the supply destinations.

South Korea also reacted harshly to Ukraine’s apology for the North Korean prisoners . The country’s government announced its intention to take “decisive measures,” including considering the possible recall of the ambassador from Kyiv.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram .

South Korean ports have become an important source of fuel for Russia amid shortages caused by strikes on Russian refineries.
