Additional anti-epizootic measures have been introduced in the Izmail district of the Odessa region due to the spread of sheep and goat pox in neighboring Romania. From October 6, grazing of livestock is prohibited in a 10-kilometer zone along the state border.

This was reported by the Main Department of the State Service for Food and Consumer Protection in the Odessa region.

It is noted that the outbreak of sheep and goat pox in Romania began in 2025 with isolated cases, but the disease spread significantly during 2026. Romanian authorities are identifying new outbreaks and introducing quarantine measures, including the destruction of infected and contact animals.

In the Izmail district, the situation is considered threatening due to its proximity to the Romanian county of Tulcea.

A 10-kilometer strip along the border with Romania has been designated as a danger zone. It includes Izmail, Reni, Kiliya, and Vylkove, as well as a number of settlements, hunting and fishing farms, and the territory of the Danube Biosphere Reserve.

Local authorities have been instructed to ban livestock grazing within this territory. By October 8, veterinary specialists are to conduct a census of all sheep and goats in the Izmail district.

In addition, police and border guards will strengthen control on highways and the state border. In seaports, operators must install disinfection mats and comply with additional veterinary and sanitary requirements.

The restrictions will remain in effect until the epizootic situation stabilizes. Their lifting must be separately agreed upon by the emergency anti-epizootic commission under the Izmail district state administration.

It was previously reported that on the night of September 29, the “Loving Hearts” animal shelter was damaged by a Russian attack. Three dogs and 10 cats died.
