Russia is changing the tactics of its massive attacks on Ukraine, using advanced Geran jet drones. Thanks to them, Russian forces can first overload air defenses with a large number of drones, and then strike individual priority targets with cruise and ballistic missiles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).<\/p>\n

Analysts have noted that Russia is increasingly concentrating large waves of drones and missiles around a limited number of targets. Previously, missiles could be distributed among a much larger number of objects in different directions.<\/p>\n

Now, Russian forces are trying to first build up an air defense load in a specific area. After that, they launch several waves of missiles at selected targets.<\/p>\n

ISW calls the attack on the night of October 7 a demonstration. According to a Russian military blogger, cited by analysts, about 30 cruise missiles were directed at Kremenchuk in Poltava region, as well as Oleksandria and Svitlovodsk in Kirovohrad region.<\/p>\n

The key role in such a scheme could be played by jet-powered versions of the Geraniums. They are faster than conventional drones of this type and are capable of passing through Ukrainian air defenses at a greater distance from the front line.<\/p>\n

“Russian Geran jet drones can more reliably penetrate Ukrainian air defenses at greater operational depth,” ISW noted.<\/p>\n

According to analysts, Russia will likely try to use this tactic during the winter campaign of 2026\u20132027. Ukrainian energy facilities may become the main targets.<\/p>\n

ISW believes that Moscow is counting on this to increase pressure on Ukrainian society and complicate everyday life. At the same time, analysts emphasize that a similar strategy has been used by Russia before and has not forced Ukraine to capitulate.<\/p>\n

In response, ISW estimates that Ukraine needs to expand production of inexpensive means to destroy jet drones and small cruise missiles. This will allow it not to waste expensive air defense missiles on each target and to respond more quickly to new Russian technologies.<\/p>\n

Separately, analysts emphasize the need for further Western assistance to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense. In particular, we are talking about Patriot systems capable of countering ballistic missiles and other complexes to create a multi-level defense system.<\/p>\n

Recall that Russia has begun using a new modification of the Geran-5 K5 strike drone, which has received an optical autonomous navigation system<\/a> . Due to its high speed, this jet drone can be perceived by Ukrainian air defense as a missile.<\/p>\n
