Lithuania is stepping up checks on the origin of grain imported into the country and is advocating a ban on the transit of Russian grain through the territory of the European Union.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This was stated by<\/a> Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevi\u010dius.<\/p>\n

According to him, Russia is trying to hinder the export of Ukrainian grain by shelling port infrastructure and ships transporting agricultural products. At the same time, the Russian Federation continues to use European ports and infrastructure, particularly in the Baltics, to transport its own grain.<\/p>\n

Previously, such transit was allowed because food was not subject to EU sanctions. Now Lithuania is proposing to change this approach.<\/p>\n

“Lithuania will propose not only to ban such transit, but also to add to the sanctions list certain Russian oligarchs from the agricultural sector who support the war,” Sinkevi\u010dius said.<\/p>\n

He also instructed state institutions to strengthen control over the origin of grain so that products stolen in Ukraine or grain mixed with it are not transported through Lithuania.<\/p>\n

According to the prime minister, law enforcement officers are checking companies involved in grain exports, including their connections and compliance with current sanctions. They are also investigating whether these companies are cooperating with Russian oligarchs who publicly support and finance the war.<\/p>\n

Separately, Lithuanian strategic infrastructure enterprises are reviewing services for such companies and assessing whether cooperation with them could pose a threat to national security.<\/p>\n

Earlier it was reported that the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that they currently do not see any prerequisites for the resumption of the Black Sea Grain Initiative.<\/a> Moscow links a possible return to the agreement with changes in the West’s sanctions policy.<\/p>\n
