The European Commission has issued a warning to Ukraine regarding the continuation of funding for the national telethon “United News” in 2026, despite declining trust and reach.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Radio Liberty reported<\/a> this, citing the European Commission’s September draft annual report on Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The media outlet notes that the official assessment will be presented at the end of October, so the document may still change. At the same time, in the version of the draft reviewed by journalists, the European Commission indicated that Ukraine has not revised its approaches to media funding.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In particular, Brussels noted that Public Broadcasting, which operates independently, grows its audience, and provides balanced coverage, receives less from the state than required by law.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to Radio Liberty, the EU recommends that Ukraine ensure adequate funding for the broadcaster and, at the same time, ensure that budget-funded media content reflects political and societal pluralism.<\/p>\n

The draft report also states that the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting is underfunded and therefore lacks the resources to fulfill its mandate.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Separately, according to media reports, the draft addresses instances of pressure on journalists in Ukraine, in particular SLAPP lawsuits (strategic lawsuits against public participation). Brussels calls for prompt and independent investigations into both direct intimidation and indirect forms of pressure on journalists and media.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, the European Union is calling on<\/a> Ukraine to gradually create a transparent and independent media space. The gradual evaluation and phasing out of the nationwide “United News” telethon is also being discussed.<\/p>\n
