Slovakia and Russia plan to resume the work of the intergovernmental commission for the first time in five years, which has not met since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The meeting is to be held in Moscow, and among the main issues are energy supplies, nuclear fuel and the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions.

As journalists found out, the intergovernmental commission is responsible for economic, scientific and technical cooperation between the two countries. Its last meeting was held in Bratislava on November 12, 2021. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the meetings were suspended.

According to the publication, journalists have obtained a Russian government note prepared by Science Minister Valery Falkov. The document states that Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar agreed to hold a meeting of the Russian-Slovak intergovernmental commission in Moscow during a video call on August 20.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Wednesday that the meeting is scheduled for November 25. At the same time, a Russian note dated September 10 called October 26-27 the preliminary dates for the meeting.

The Slovak Foreign Ministry, answering questions about the possible agenda, referred journalists to Blanar’s public statements after the conversation on August 20.

“We pursue a policy in all directions and maintain a dialogue with all countries that are interested in pragmatic cooperation with us for the benefit of the national interests of the Slovak Republic,” said the head of the Slovak Foreign Ministry.

According to the Russian document, during an August video conference, Blanard expressed disagreement with the European Union’s gradual withdrawal from Russian gas and proposed discussing the issue of its supply at a meeting in Moscow.

Bratislava also advocated maintaining the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline and positively assessed regular supplies of nuclear fuel for Slovak nuclear power plants.

In addition to energy, the parties plan to discuss other areas of cooperation. In particular, the issue is the creation of working groups on culture, tourism, agriculture and environmental protection. The status of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Bratislava may also be on the agenda.

Separately, they plan to consider the situation of Russian athletes at international competitions. The Russian note calls the restrictions on them “discrimination against Russian athletes.” Blanard, for his part, expressed disagreement with such restrictions and said that this issue should be brought up for discussion by an intergovernmental commission.

It was previously reported that Slovakia and Russia have resumed the exchange of military attaches for the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
