As of noon, about 140 rallies were recorded outside Paris, involving more than 32,000 people, and law enforcement officers had detained more than 160 people across the country.

This is reported by Reuters .

During the protests in Paris, police used water cannons and tear gas after clashes with hundreds of demonstrators. Most participants wore masks, some set off fireworks. Thousands of people marched through the capital, blocking major roads. Authorities closed a number of metro stations in the city center due to the actions.

In Marseille, protesters stormed the city hall. Masked demonstrators rammed the door with protective barriers, after which several people entered. One of the participants painted an anarchist symbol on the interior wall of the building. Police intervened to disperse the protesters. The mayor of Marseille reported damage to the city hall and said that additional police forces would be sent to the city after talks with the prime minister and the interior minister.

In Paris, windows were also broken in the offices of French broadcasters CNews and Europe 1. According to Reuters, vandalism and attacks on law enforcement officers, media representatives, and public buildings were recorded in several cities across the country.

In Lyon, a building housing a tourism office caught fire. In the western city of Rennes, about 20 people built a barricade of garbage cans and large pallets on the edge of a shopping mall.

According to the French Interior Ministry, by noon, about 140 rallies had taken place outside Paris, involving more than 32,800 people. Law enforcement officers had detained more than 160 people across the country. Authorities linked the unrest to the activities of far-left forces.

Protests began last month in high schools in the northern suburbs of Paris, sparking anger over teacher shortages and the poor state of schools, and have since grown into a broader movement against inequality, cuts in public spending and falling living standards.

The protests were joined by representatives of the “Yellow Vest” movement, which emerged in 2018 over a planned increase in fuel taxes and later expanded its demands to combat the high cost of living and inequality. Organizers called for protests under the slogan “yellow vests and youth,” inviting teachers, schoolchildren, workers, pensioners and farmers to join.

One of the protest participants in Paris, 19-year-old Lola, explained the reasons for the discontent: “We are fighting because the cost of living is too high, fuel prices are too high, and high school students across the country are being brutally attacked and injured just for trying to protest and demand more teachers and proper learning conditions,” she told Reuters reporters.

The protests have increased pressure on French President Emmanuel Macron and his government. There has also been ongoing criticism of the police’s actions over allegations of disproportionate use of force. According to Reuters, the police inspectorate is investigating at least 24 allegations of violence by law enforcement officers. Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu said that more than 900 police officers were injured.

On Friday, Macron called for calm and respect, stressing that the right to protest must be combined with respect for people and property.

Recall that large-scale protests by high school students are ongoing in France, which began due to problems in the education system and spread to various cities in the country .
