Democratic and Republican senators and members of the U.S. House of Representatives have criticized President Donald Trump’s moves to ease sanctions against Russia, saying they weaken pressure on Vladimir Putin, undermine support for Ukraine and go against the will of Congress.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said<\/a> Trump’s decision actually helps the Russian economy and benefits Putin. He also stressed that easing sanctions is not in the interests of Americans.<\/p>\n

Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas also criticized<\/a> the president’s decision, saying that Trump signed an executive order exempting Russia from the sanctions law.<\/p>\n

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shagin stressed<\/a> that Congress has spoken out in favor of increasing pressure on Russia. According to her, Ukraine is fighting for survival, while Russian forces continue to attack Ukrainian cities with ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n

Democratic Senator Dick Durbin said<\/a> Congress passed a sweeping sanctions bill against Russia with broad bipartisan support to end the war in Ukraine, but he said Trump has once again caved in to the Kremlin.<\/p>\n

Senator Richard Blumenthal accused<\/a> the Trump administration of pressuring Ukraine and urged the president to cancel the diesel deal and continue supporting Ukraine. Congressman Suhas Subramanian said<\/a> Trump’s actions undermine Congress’s authority and allow Putin to avoid accountability. He called for a return to Washington and tougher sanctions against Russia.<\/p>\n

Congressman Mike Quigley reported<\/a> on work to ensure compliance with US sanctions obligations against Russia. His colleague Bill Keating urged Republicans to consider a bill that would strengthen Congressional oversight of sanctions and prevent the president from lifting them without the input of lawmakers.<\/p>\n

Democrat Ami Bera said<\/a> the diesel deal could provide Russia with additional funds to wage war against Ukraine without guaranteeing a significant reduction in fuel prices in the U.S. He said he and 17 colleagues have introduced a bipartisan bill to block the deal.<\/p>\n
