US President Donald Trump is once again considering evicting journalists from the White House. One of the reasons for this move is the desire to restore the indoor swimming pool, which was built during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt.

The New York Times writes about this.

According to the publication, Trump discussed the idea in the Oval Office in late August with then-White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt. In the presence of several senior officials, he suggested that she remove reporters from the James Brady Press Room. The president called the move a possible “last legacy” for Leavitt in office.

However, the idea never came to fruition. According to three people familiar with the matter, Trump kept coming back to the proposal for months. Leavitt left her position on August 27 after giving birth to her child.

The desire to restore the pool was one of the explanations for the president’s initiative. It was built in 1933 for Franklin Roosevelt, who suffered from polio and used water treatments for treatment. Later, during the presidency of Richard Nixon, the pool was covered to provide a space for journalists to work.

According to the NYT, the relocation of the press center could have a much broader meaning than just changing the location of workplaces. Against the backdrop of Trump’s conflicts with the media, this could be a symbolic step that will affect the traditions of interaction between the government and the press in the United States. The work of journalists directly in the White House has long been considered one of the manifestations of the role of independent media in the country’s democratic system.

In addition, after moving the press center, it may be difficult for subsequent presidents to return it to its previous location.

Trump raised the issue of expelling journalists during his first term as president, and now, according to the publication, more and more people around him support the idea.

Some insiders have suggested that journalists could be moved to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, across the street from the White House, in what they believe would be another step in a crackdown on the media that has already gone beyond what was previously anticipated.

Back on September 27, Trump posted an image of the press room on social media with the caption “Fake News.” In another post, he showed an altered image of the room transformed into a gilded swimming pool, captioning it “FDR’s Pool.”

It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level of his presidency, while Democrats have widened their lead over Republicans ahead of the midterm elections for Congress.
