In Moscow, US President’s Special Representative Steve Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin. The main topics of the talks included the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine, the resumption of trilateral contacts between Kyiv, Washington and Moscow, and the prospects for economic cooperation between the US and Russia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before the talks began, Witkoff said he saw some progress in resolving the war. He also planned to tell Putin about the results of the previous talks in Oslo.<\/p>\n

“I believe the negotiations were productive. I can say that there is some progress,” the US representative noted.<\/p>\n

Witkoff brought to the Kremlin documents with proposals for resolving the war in Ukraine. He also expressed hope that Putin would agree to resume trilateral talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. According to him, in such a format, technical issues could be discussed.<\/p>\n

Separately, the American representative thanked the Russian leadership for the release of US citizen Stephen Gabbard. The 73-year-old man was sentenced in Russia to six years and ten months in prison on charges of mercenary activity.<\/p>\n

Gabbard lived in Izyum, Kharkiv Oblast, where he taught English. In 2022, he was abducted by Russian occupiers. According to media reports, the man was held in Mordovia and tortured. In April 2025, the US State Department called on Russia to release him.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Putin also raised the issue of economic relations with the United States. He expressed interest in supplying the American market not only with diesel fuel, but also with fertilizers. For his part, Witkoff noted that the prospects for the development of economic cooperation will depend on the end of the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

In addition, Putin stated Russia’s readiness to help resolve the conflict over Iran. He also asked Witkoff to convey his gratitude to Donald Trump for his attention to the Ukrainian issue, and separately mentioned the wife of the US President, Melania Trump.<\/p>\n

After the talks in Moscow, Witkoff is expected to return to Norway. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov could not clarify whether the parties plan to hold another round of meetings.<\/p>\n

Recall that Russia is ready to consider the proposals of the US President’s special representative Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, but is not going to make political concessions<\/a> . At the same time, Moscow allows for the possibility of economic agreements with Washington.<\/p>\n
