North Korea has sent about 12,000 of its citizens to Russia to work at a factory producing Shahed attack drones in the Alabuga special economic zone in Tatarstan. The workers receive only a small portion of the money they earn, with the rest being appropriated by the North Korean authorities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is stated<\/a> in a joint report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the George W. Bush Institute.<\/p>\n

According to researchers, the hourly wage of North Korean citizens is about $2.50. At the same time, the North Korean government takes from 70% to 90% of their earnings.<\/p>\n

The factory also employs citizens of Russia and other countries. The authors of the report divide the company’s employees into three main groups: Russian youth, foreigners, and citizens of the DPRK. The researchers note that the Russian authorities may apply coercive practices to the first two categories. In contrast, Pyongyang, according to their assessment, openly sends its citizens to forced labor and appropriates a significant part of their income.<\/p>\n

How to attract Russian youth to work<\/h3>\n

One way to attract young Russians to manufacturing is through the Alabuga College, which offers students internships. However, the report notes that shifts can be up to 12 hours long and wages are dependent on meeting strict production standards.<\/p>\n

Additionally, young workers are reportedly threatened with fines for disclosing information about the company’s products. The ban even extends to conversations with family members, raising concerns about working conditions and possible pressure on employees.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that North Korea is using the experience of Russia’s war against Ukraine to improve its own weapons and develop military capabilities.<\/a> According to the head of the Presidential Office, Kirill Budanov, Pyongyang has also already established mass production of disposable attack drones.<\/p>\n
