In Prague on the evening of October 23, several dozen protesters tried to force their way into the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament. Police stopped the attempt, and no arrests were made following the incident.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The protest began on the afternoon of October 23 at Malostranska Square near the parliament. By the evening, the number of participants in the action reached several hundred people.<\/p>\n

The reason for the dissatisfaction was the government coalition’s draft law, which provides for the abolition of subscription fees for Czech Television and Czech Radio and the transition to funding from the state budget.<\/p>\n

The participants in the action chanted slogans against the proposed changes and demanded that Culture Minister Otto Klempierz, who had prepared the relevant initiative, respond to their demands.<\/p>\n

In the evening, several dozen protesters tried to force their way into the parliament building. Special police officers prevented them from entering and stabilized the situation.<\/p>\n

“Several dozen people tried to force their way into the Chamber of Deputies building, but police officers from the Special Police Unit were forced to prevent them from doing so. No one was arrested, and the situation was calmed down,” police spokeswoman Eva Kropacova said.<\/p>\n

During the rally, a conflict also broke out between several demonstrators and SPD MP Jaroslav Foldyna. Police intervened and separated the participants in the argument.<\/p>\n

The opposition and protesters fear that the transition of public broadcasters to state funding could jeopardize their independence.<\/p>\n

On October 24, the Chamber of Deputies sent the bill for further consideration. The opposition failed to get it rejected or returned to the government for revision. A final decision on changing the funding of public media has not yet been made.<\/p>\n
