Israel is holding parliamentary elections on October 27, which will determine the new composition of the Knesset and the political future of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. These are the first elections since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 and the start of the war in the Gaza Strip.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to pre-election polls, Netanyahu faces a tough fight with the opposition. One of his main rivals is former Chief of the General Staff of Israel Gadi Eisenkot, who heads the centrist Yashar party.<\/p>\n

Eisenkot was previously a member of Netanyahu’s military cabinet, but left it, stating that the government lacked a clear strategy for the war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Other opposition politicians include former Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, who are running in the elections as part of the Razom political alliance.<\/p>\n

How will the new government be formed?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Israelis elect 120 members of the Knesset. At least 61 seats are needed to form a parliamentary majority.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pre-election polls indicated close results between the political camps. However, the final distribution of seats will only be known after the vote count.<\/p>\n

After the elections, the parties will need to agree on a coalition. Possible scenarios include an opposition government, a national unity coalition, or a minority government. If no agreement is reached, the country could face re-election.<\/p>\n

What complicates Netanyahu’s situation<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the key themes of the campaign was the authorities’ responsibility for the failure of the security system during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu is also on trial on corruption charges. He denies the charges, and there has been no verdict in the case.<\/p>\n

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the war in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Prime Minister maintains close relations with US President Donald Trump and uses them as one of the arguments in favor of his political leadership.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, on October 22, it became known that the US and Israel are preparing plans for new strikes on Iran<\/a> . US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the possible resumption of the military operation.<\/p>\n
