Democrats in the US Congress are demanding the appointment of a special counsel to investigate President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and they are accusing the Justice Department of covering up evidence in the case.

This is reported by The Hill, citing a report by Democrats in the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives.

What Democrats demand

The report censures Attorney General Todd Blanchett, saying he cannot provide an independent investigation because of his previous work as Trump’s personal lawyer. Democrats also allege that the Justice Department is covering up evidence that could implicate the president.

“Instead of seeking justice for those affected by Epstein’s actions, former Attorney General Pam Bondi and Attorney General Blanche ran the Department of Justice like a private law firm defending their former client,” the report said.

The authors of the document call for the appointment of an independent special prosecutor to investigate Trump’s possible involvement in Epstein’s crimes, as well as to verify the actions of other possible accomplices. Democrats believe this is necessary to bring the perpetrators to criminal responsibility.

The report also notes that 11 women have linked Trump to sexual crimes related to Epstein. According to the authors of the document, five of them directly accused the president of rape or sexual assault in Epstein’s presence or in his company.

House Judiciary Committee member Jamie Raskin emphasized that the women’s testimony, in his opinion, contradicts Trump’s statements about the nature of his acquaintance with Epstein.

“Donald Trump claims he knew Jeffrey Epstein as well as everyone in Palm Beach knew him. That’s not entirely true. The evidence involving the 11 women tells a very different and much more damning story about their relationship and the abuse of young women and girls that occurred within their circle,” Raskin said.

The White House, however, has denied the allegations. Administration spokeswoman Laurene Bies called the report an attempt by Democrats to distract public attention from Republicans’ political achievements. She also said that Trump is completely acquitted in the Epstein case.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton previously linked Washington’s concessions to the Kremlin with possible compromising material on Trump. In her opinion, this may be evidenced by the president’s attempts to hide the Epstein case materials.

Earlier it was reported that Democratic senators and Congressman Greg Meeks called on major banks and port authorities to preserve documents related to agreements for the supply of Russian diesel fuel. If Democrats regain control of one or both houses of Congress, an investigation into President Donald Trump’s agreements with Moscow could become one of the priorities.
