The Verkhovna Rada plans to reconsider draft law No. 10242<\/a> , which provides for stricter penalties for publishing information from state registers. The journalistic community warns that the new rules could complicate corruption investigations and create risks for freedom of speech.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bill would increase criminal liability for the use and dissemination of information from closed state databases. In particular, critics of the document warn that journalists could face up to eight years in prison for working with such data, for example, during investigations into the assets of officials.<\/p>\n

In addition, human rights activists and media representatives fear that law enforcement agencies will be able to use the provisions of the bill to monitor journalists, listen to their conversations, and identify sources of information.<\/p>\n

Critics say this could create additional opportunities for pressure on journalists who expose corruption.<\/p>\n

The Verkhovna Rada already tried to pass this bill in December 2024, but then the deputies did not support it. Now the document has reappeared on the parliamentary agenda.<\/p>\n

Representatives of the journalistic community are urging people’s deputies not to vote for draft law No. 10242 in its current version due to possible threats to independent investigations and freedom of speech.<\/p>\n
