The Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions on the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is headed by Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev, as a possible incentive for Moscow to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the publication, the Russian side is promoting the idea of lifting sanctions in connection with agreements on the supply of diesel fuel. Moscow wants to use the RFPI for payments, as the current restrictions complicate financial transactions.<\/p>\n

An American official confirmed to reporters that the Trump administration is considering the fund’s request to be removed from the sanctions list.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the US Treasury Department states that it has already issued all necessary permits for transactions under the diesel deal. To fully lift sanctions, RFPI must go through a standard procedure and justify the elimination of the reasons for which restrictions were imposed against it.<\/p>\n

The US imposed sanctions against the fund and its head, Kirill Dmitriev, in February 2022, after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The RFPI was created to attract foreign investment into the Russian economy. Its head, Dmitriev, is involved in negotiations between Moscow and Washington, including on possible economic cooperation.<\/p>\n

The US administration has not yet made a final decision on lifting the sanctions. The fund remains under restrictions, and the timing of a possible review of its status is unknown.<\/p>\n
