The Pentagon has been urging several NATO countries to be more cautious about Russia in recent weeks, saying that harsh rhetoric from European leaders could negatively impact European security.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Which countries received recommendations from the Pentagon?<\/h2>\n

Among the countries that US officials have reached out to are Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The signals were conveyed during bilateral meetings. It is not yet known whether other European governments have received similar advice.<\/p>\n

The United States is concerned about statements by European leaders that Russia has found itself in a difficult situation, and due to failures on the front, it is becoming increasingly unpredictable and resorting to desperate actions.<\/p>\n

One of the American representatives who conveyed such signals to European partners was the head of the Pentagon’s political department, Elbridge Colby. He is also involved in reviewing the size of the American military contingent in Europe.<\/p>\n

During a recent conversation with a representative of one of the Baltic countries, Colby emphasized that “Europe should not tease Russia.”<\/p>\n

As an example of unsuccessful statements, he cited public statements that Russia was cornered like a rat.<\/p>\n

This is probably referring to the words of Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal. In late September, he called Vladimir Putin “a rat driven into a corner.” At the time, the Estonian prime minister suggested that the Russian leader was resorting to sabotage in Europe because Russia was increasingly mired in the war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

One of the European officials explained the American side’s position as follows: the US is helping Europe, but at the same time it is urging it not to attract unnecessary attention with loud statements.<\/p>\n

Additionally, during a separate meeting, US representatives asked the Estonian delegation to be more restrained in public communications. It is not known whether these recommendations referred to any specific statements.<\/p>\n

Another European official called such calls by the Americans strange. According to him, the intelligence agencies of the Baltic countries have already assessed the probability of Russia testing the strength of NATO’s collective defense mechanism as low in recent months.<\/p>\n

At the same time, intelligence agencies of other Alliance countries publicly warned that Russia could significantly intensify its subversive activities in Europe in the near future.<\/p>\n

It was previously reported that since early October, Russian drones have attacked seven merchant ships off the coast of Bulgaria and Romania,<\/a> killing more than 20 sailors. Some of the attacks occurred in the territorial waters of NATO countries or near their borders, raising fears of escalation from Russia.<\/p>\n
