According to a US official, the general admitted to passing classified information on video after failing four polygraph tests.

The internal report accuses the serviceman of unauthorized disclosure of information to media representatives. At the same time, it is noted that during the investigation he agreed to answer questions about contacts with journalists and provided his own phone for forensic examination.

According to the report and explanations from US officials, the transfer of information began in June 2025, before the leading media outlets lost their accreditation at the Pentagon. Further contacts with journalists continued via the secure messenger Signal. At least one meeting took place in person at the Silver Diner in Arlington, Virginia.

The report described the circumstances of this meeting. Due to the cancellation of one of the interlocutors’ access to the Pentagon between meetings, the general decided to convey the information during a personal conversation.

“The diner meeting took place because access to [redacted] to the Pentagon was revoked between meetings. During the diner meeting, [Sylvia] relied on notes taken during a review of a classified report to verbally convey [redacted] information about U.S. assistance to Ukraine,” the document states.

The report also states that one of the journalists worked on the book and met with Sylvia twice. The general did not coordinate these contacts with the Pentagon’s public affairs department and did not attempt to submit the information for pre-checking before its publication.

American officials also suspect that Sylvia intentionally deleted a history of correspondence with one of the journalists on Signal, and later presented it as an accident.

Another source told Axios that Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle and his office had tried to persuade the Joint Chiefs of Staff to issue a statement in support of Sylvia, hoping to mitigate the reputational fallout from future leaks. However, after Defense Department officials explained the true reasons for the general’s dismissal to the staff, they withdrew the statement.

How the Pentagon fights information leaks

Sylvia’s release was another episode in the Pentagon’s confrontation under Pete Hegseth with leaks of classified data and media representatives.

In July, the US Department of Defense announced the creation of a joint working group with the Department of Justice to identify the sources of unauthorized disclosures within the Pentagon.

In addition, the department called on the Pentagon’s Office of General Counsel to focus on prosecuting individuals who pass confidential information to journalists without proper authorization.

Last year, due to restrictions imposed by the Ministry of Defense, several military correspondents and media outlets refused their accreditation passes.

It was previously reported that former US Army Major Nidal Hassan, who was sentenced to death for the murder of 13 people at the Fort Hood military base in Texas in 2009 , is scheduled to be executed on December 3. The Pentagon confirmed that the execution will be broadcast live on the Internet.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram.

U.S. Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, who served as one of the Pentagon’s top military planners, has admitted to leaking classified information about Ukraine and Iran to two journalists over the course of a year, both over the secure messaging app Signal and during a face-to-face meeting at a diner in Virginia.
