A 55-year-old Russian citizen suspected of working for foreign intelligence was detained in the Polish city of Swidnica. During the search, law enforcement officers seized 250,000 photographs, and a court ruled to take the man into custody for 3 months.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Polish police, the Russian was detained in \u015awidnica while he was taking photos of trains and the city’s railway infrastructure. Law enforcement officers determined that the man had come to Poland on official business.<\/p>\n

During the analysis of electronic devices and data carriers belonging to the detainee, the police found hundreds of thousands of files with photographs of various locations and important transport facilities. Some of the materials concerned railway infrastructure and facilities identified as critically important. The photographs were taken not only in Poland.<\/p>\n

Karolina Halecka, a spokeswoman for the Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration, said that law enforcement officers seized 250,000 photographs. At the same time, some of the materials may be stored on other media.<\/p>\n

The prosecutor’s office must analyze the collected materials to establish who ordered the photos, in which countries they were taken, and whether this data was transferred to a foreign state.<\/p>\n

According to Halecka, during interrogation, the man was unable to consistently explain why he was in Poland and what he was doing in the country. The spokeswoman called his answers to law enforcement officers inconsistent and illogical.<\/p>\n

The court ordered a 55-year-old Russian man to be detained for 3 months. He was charged with carrying out activities for the benefit of foreign intelligence against Poland.<\/p>\n

The case was also commented on by the Minister-Coordinator of Polish Special Services, Tomasz Siemoniak. He stated that the detention of a Russian citizen may indicate a change in the approaches of Russian special services to such activities.<\/p>\n

“A Russian appeared, although until now the Russian services have avoided sending Russian citizens to the front lines, realizing that this is very difficult both from an image point of view and in view of the subsequent detention of such individuals,” said Semoniak.<\/p>\n

Recall that Russian hackers gained access to Internet cameras installed along NATO military transport routes<\/a> to monitor the movement of military equipment to Ukraine. Dutch intelligence services have warned owners of such devices about the need to strengthen their protection.<\/p>\n
