Additional tensions have been caused by the Donald Trump administration’s decisions on Russia and the curtailment of support for Ukraine.

This is reported by Reuters .

The US holds the G20 presidency this year and plans to focus on trade imbalances and countering China’s control over critical mineral resources. At the same time, wars and their economic consequences remain a major source of disagreement between the participants.

Tensions have been heightened by Washington’s decision not to invite the South African foreign minister to the meeting, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend the summit. This has led some European officials to suggest taking two separate joint photos: one with Lavrov, the other without him.

Former US State Department chief economist Heidi Krebo-Rediker said the G20 is more divided than ever, with even the G7 no longer speaking with a single, unified voice.

Participants are concerned about US President Donald Trump’s decisions regarding Russia, including the diesel fuel deal, the lifting of some sanctions, and the restriction of the Starshield satellite system for Ukraine. Krebo-Rediker believes that Trump’s position on the side of Vladimir Putin and against Ukraine will be one of the most contentious topics of the closed discussions.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaia Kallas said that at the summit she would call for increased support for Ukraine and for Russia to be held accountable through the Special Tribunal.

At the same time, diplomats expect that some countries will try to avoid aggravating relations with the US due to ongoing trade negotiations with Washington.

It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump expects to reach a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia by December, during the G20 summit, which is scheduled to be held at his golf resort near Miami . According to advisers, the American leader imagines how he will stand between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin when signing the agreements, even if this means forcing Kyiv to agree to them.

Also follow “Pryamim” on Facebook , X , Telegram , and Instagram .

A two-day meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta, U.S., on October 30-31 could end without a joint statement due to disagreements over the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.
