At the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta, EU High Representative Kaia Kallas accused Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of spreading false claims about the war in Ukraine. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband also called Russia an aggressor and said it would not win a war against Ukraine.

This is reported by AFP .

During the talks in Atlanta, Kaia Kallas stated that Sergei Lavrov had spread false claims about the war in Ukraine.

“He expressed a lot of lies, a lot of false narratives,” Callas said in comments to AFP.

European officials have also sought to increase pressure on Moscow, particularly to secure a ceasefire in the Black Sea, which is an important corridor for agricultural exports.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband directly addressed Lavrov during the meeting, reminding him of Russian attacks against the civilian population of Ukraine.

“Let me say this straight to the Russian Foreign Minister – we all know who the aggressor is in this war,” Miliband said.

He also emphasized that Russia will not be able to win the war thanks to the resistance of the Ukrainian people and the support of international partners.

“Putin thought then that he would easily win this war. But you will not win this war,” the British Foreign Secretary said, addressing Lavrov.

According to a European diplomatic source, Lavrov behaved provocatively during the meeting. At the same time, he briefly spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was hosting the meeting, and called the conversation “decent.”

During the press conference, Lavrov criticized European representatives for their “arrogant boycott” and positively assessed the readiness of US President Donald Trump’s administration to interact with Moscow.

A joint photo of the G20 foreign ministers was canceled after some European officials objected to being photographed with Lavrov. A US official explained that the decision was made so that the protocol photo session would not distract from the diplomatic talks.

Separately, Lavrov said that there has been no real rapprochement between Moscow and Washington. He also complained about the continuation of sanctions imposed under the previous US administration and new restrictions against Russian oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft.

The ministerial meeting in the US is expected to pave the way for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami. Instead of a joint final declaration, a report prepared by the United States is expected to follow the two-day talks.

It was previously reported that a two-day meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta, USA, on October 30-31 may end without a joint statement due to disagreements over the war in Ukraine and the Middle East. Additional tensions have been caused by the decisions of the Donald Trump administration on Russia and the limitation of support for Ukraine.
