US President Donald Trump is helping Russian leader Vladimir Putin rekindle international contacts, while Washington’s relations with Kyiv are deteriorating. Against this backdrop, European countries fear losing US support and are discussing the possibility of resuming direct dialogue with Moscow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the publication, Putin is receiving invitations to high-level meetings and concessions from the United States, despite the ongoing war against Ukraine. In particular, the Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions against the Russian Direct Investment Fund.<\/p>\n

“I think the Kremlin is really celebrating right now. Regardless of what they do or don’t do, they are getting something they didn’t even expect,” said Stefan Meister, a Russia analyst at the German Council on Foreign Relations.<\/p>\n

Putin is due to visit China in November for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, where he could hold a trilateral meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Trump. In December, the Russian leader could also travel to Miami for the G20 summit, if he accepts the US president’s invitation.<\/p>\n

As the publication notes, amid Putin’s gradual restoration of international contacts, relations between the United States and Ukraine continue to deteriorate.<\/p>\n

In October, Trump publicly called on Ukrainians to elect a new president and called Volodymyr Zelenskyy “an obstacle to peace.” Also, according to the publication, Ukrainian defense forces have lost access to SpaceX’s Starshield, and Ukraine’s stockpile of American air defense assets is dwindling.<\/p>\n

The master noted that Putin had long hoped to wait until the United States and European countries lost their determination to support Ukraine.<\/p>\n

“Putin got the impression that he was right. That he just needed to wait it out, and in the end he would be able to get more from Trump than he could have imagined,” the analyst said.<\/p>\n

Amid the differences between Washington and Kiev, European countries are debating whether to resume direct dialogue with Putin. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re recently spoke by phone with the Russian leader.<\/p>\n

Putin called the contact a sign of interest from some European leaders in constructive dialogue. At the same time, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen criticized the leaders of Finland and Norway, saying they were “acting independently.”<\/p>\n
