The Italian finished third, behind Red Bull&#8217;s Max Verstappen and Ferrari&#8217;s Lewis Hamilton. A ninth place was enough for him to clinch the championship early.<\/p>\n<p> Antonelli broke the record of Sebastian Vettel, who became champion in 2010 at the age of 23 years and 134 days. He also brought Italy its first Formula One title in 73 years \u2013 the previous Italian champion was Alberto Ascari in 1953.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe did it! Without Mercedes and my family I wouldn\u2019t be here. I\u2019m incredibly grateful for this moment, it will stay with me forever. I just have no words \u2013 I\u2019m still trying to comprehend what just happened,\u201d Antonelli said after the finish.<\/p>\n<p> He became the fifth driver in Formula One history to win the championship in his second season, the last to do so being Lewis Hamilton in 2008.<\/p>\n<p> Despite the early determination of the champion, the fight for second and third places in the individual standings continues. Antonelli&#8217;s closest pursuers are Max Verstappen with 261 points, Lewis Hamilton with 259 and George Russell with 250.<\/p>\n<p> Mercedes leads the Constructors&#8217; Championship with 630 points, ahead of Ferrari, which has 504 points.
