The operation to evacuate civilians from the occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region was essentially orchestrated by Ukrainian and Russian military intelligence. At the same time, it was publicly presented as the result of diplomatic mediation by US First Lady Melania Trump.<\/strong><\/div>\n

The French publication Le Monde writes about this, citing its own sources.<\/p>\n

According to journalists, Moscow had long refused to open a humanitarian corridor to Oleshky. However, in the summer of 2026, the parties agreed to direct negotiations between the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n

After four months of consultations, the practical organization of the evacuation was entrusted to the human rights commissioners of the two countries \u2013 Dmitry Lubinets from Ukraine and Yana Lantratova from Russia.<\/p>\n

Despite this, the operation was carried out under the auspices of the White House and presented as Melania Trump’s personal achievement. Meanwhile, the exact level of Washington’s involvement remains unknown, Le Monde notes.<\/p>\n

Experts and the publication’s sources suggest that Kyiv and Moscow may have deliberately granted Washington diplomatic favors, having already agreed on the main details of the deal. This could have been a gesture toward US President Donald Trump, who seeks to play the role of chief mediator in international processes.<\/p>\n

“Having realized that he would not receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump may have decided to try to get it for Melania,” the publication writes. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
