The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has sentenced a group of Ukrainian prisoners of war who fought as part of the Aidar battalion to long terms of imprisonment — from 15 to 21 years in a maximum-security colony.
This was reported by the Russian publication “Mediazona” with reference to the court’s press service.
Judge Kirill Kryvtsov found the fighters guilty under several articles of the Russian Criminal Code:
– participation in the activities of a terrorist organization,
– an attempt to seize power by force,
– undergoing training for terrorist purposes.
At the same time, as human rights activists note, the defendants were not charged with specific crimes. The only evidence of their “guilt” was their service in the “Aidar” battalion, a volunteer unit operating within the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The accusations even included those who did not participate in hostilities – in particular, medics and drivers.
Who received what sentences:
15 years old — Dmytro Fedchenko
16 years old — Andriy Sholik, Vitaliy Krokhalyov, Vyacheslav Baydyuk
18 years old — Volodymyr Makarenko, Ihor Gayokha
20 years — Mykola Chupryna, Taras Radchenko, Semen Zabayrachny, Serhiy Nikityuk, Oleksandr Taranets, Vladyslav Yermolinsky
21 years old — Vitaliy Gruzinov, Roman Nedostup, Serhiy Kalinchenko
The case of serviceman Yevhen Pyatigorets is being considered separately – the prosecutor’s office has not yet filed a request for punishment.
The case also involved two women, military medics Liliya Prutyan and Maryna Mishchenko. They were returned to Ukraine during one of the prisoner exchanges. The proceedings against them were separated into a separate case.
The trial has been held behind closed doors since October 2024. The Russian side cited “increased attention to the case” and alleged “threats to the participants in the trial” as the formal pretext.
Ukrainian military personnel reported at meetings about torture during detention in the Russian-controlled “DPR.” Despite this, no verification of these claims was conducted.
As reported, a military court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Ukrainian prisoner of war, Azov Brigade fighter Dmytro Remez . The 33-year-old defender was sentenced to 18 years in a strict regime colony.
