21 Ukrainians escaped from temporarily occupied territories: how the evacuation was managed

21 Ukrainian citizens were returned from the temporarily occupied territories. 17 people were evacuated thanks to the work of the Ombudsman’s Office, and four more were returned through third countries – Georgia and Moldova.

This was announced by the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.

Among the evacuees are three families from the Kherson region. Before the occupation, they were neighbors, and later became close friends and supported each other during shelling, long power outages, and food shortages.

Not all family members were able to leave. Two people remained in the temporarily occupied territory due to a sharp deterioration in their health.

After returning, the families wanted to stay together. Among them are people with disabilities, and they could not find housing on their own. With the assistance of the Ombudsman’s Office and the NGO “CF “Rokada””, they were provided with shared housing.

Four more evacuees are a family: a Ukrainian man, his father, and two young girls. According to Lubinets, they were persecuted after the children’s mother was detained for her pro-Ukrainian stance and sentenced to a long prison sentence.

The Ombudsman separately drew attention to the situation in the occupied Oleshki in the Kherson region. According to him, people there remain without proper access to medicines, food, and other basic items, and the possibilities for safe departure are significantly limited.

“We are working on each of them, working with state and international partners, and looking for all possible ways to return our citizens,” Lubinets said.
