Journalist Georgy Gongadze disappeared on the night of September 16-17, 2000. At the time, no one believed that he could have been murdered — but within a few weeks, it became clear that this was exactly the case.
The headless body was found in the Tarashchansky Forest only two and a half weeks after his disappearance. The family refused to admit for a long time that it was Georgy. His mother never agreed to his burial — and it was only after her death, in 2016.
Three police officers were convicted for the journalist’s kidnapping and murder. A year later, former Interior Ministry general Oleksiy Pukach was also sentenced. But even after 25 years, society has not received the main answer: who ordered the journalist’s murder — and why Gongadze?
Heorhiy was well-known in Lviv — there he studied, got married, worked on documentary films, and was a journalist. In 2000, he was already the founder of the publication “Ukrainian Truth” — and openly criticized the corrupt government of Leonid Kuchma.
