35-minute lessons and changes in the schedule: the Ministry of Education and Science explained new rules for schools

This was reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

The duration of classes can be changed by the teacher if the lesson is held in a shelter. In this case, the teacher must take into account the age of the students and their psycho-emotional state, and adapt the educational material so that the students achieve the results provided for by the educational program.

A separate approach is possible after a long stay of children in shelters or night shelling. If schoolchildren are tired, the format of the lesson can be changed. And when the planned results have already been achieved, part of the lesson can be devoted to psychological relief.

At the same time, the duration of the lesson does not necessarily have to correspond to the maximum established indicators. The sanitary regulations provide for:

• • for 1st grade – up to 35 minutes;

• • for grades 2–4 — up to 40 minutes;

• • for grades 5–11(12) — up to 45 minutes.

That is, we are talking about the upper limit of the duration of continuous learning, and not about the mandatory duration of each lesson.

Changes may not only affect the duration of classes. If a school missed some lessons due to an air raid warning, the administration may rearrange the schedule.

For primary grades, for example, the sequence of subjects can be changed to allow for classes that require more concentration and work with the teacher after school. In basic and high schools, schedule adjustments are also allowed.

The Ministry of Education and Science emphasizes that there is no single scenario for all schools. The security situation in communities varies, so educational institutions must take into account local conditions.

To this end, the ministry, together with teachers, school principals, parent organizations, and heads of education authorities, has prepared recommendations for teaching during prolonged and repeated alarms.

Schools are advised to prepare several options for organizing learning in advance in the event of prolonged air alerts. The main priorities remain the safety and health of children and the quality of education.

It was previously reported that in Ukraine, teachers can shorten a lesson to 35 minutes if they see that children are tired and have difficulty concentrating. If necessary, teachers can also change lessons in the schedule.
