5G in Ukraine this fall: first cities for launch named
Fifth-generation (5G) mobile communications technology will begin testing in Ukraine this fall. The first cities to test the network will be Lviv, Kharkiv, and Borodyanka.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybytko in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.
As explained by a representative of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the full launch of 5G in Ukraine will be possible only after the end of martial law, because now critical infrastructure has priority in resources.
However, the autumn testing will allow us to collect practical data on the network’s operation, establish technical processes, and lay the foundation for a gradual expansion of coverage.
According to forecasts, large-scale implementation of 5G across the country is possible no earlier than 2030.
“Our goal is to gradually deploy a new generation network immediately after the end of the active phase of the war. This requires not only a technical base, but also updating legislation and frequency resources,” Prybytko noted.
According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation, about 22% of smartphones in Ukraine are already technically ready to work in 5G networks. This creates a good basis for rapid adaptation of the new technology after its launch.
The first educational institution where 5G has already become a reality is the Kyiv Aviation Institute. In partnership with the operator Vodafone, they opened a university 5G space.
Now students, faculty, and guests of the university can experience the fastest mobile internet in real time, allowing them to work with VR, AR, cloud services, and transfer data with minimal latency.
Recall that in 2030, third-generation 3G mobile communications will be completely turned off in Ukraine.
