90 billion euros in aid: EU approves loan for Ukraine and new sanctions against Russia

The European Union finally unblocked a loan to support Ukraine for 2026–2027 and simultaneously adopted the 20th package of sanctions against Russia.

This was announced by the President of the European Council, António Costa.

“Promised, fulfilled, implemented,” he said, commenting on the decisions made.

Costa emphasized that the EU’s strategy for achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine is based on two key areas: strengthening Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia.

“Today we have made progress in both directions: we have unlocked a loan for Ukraine worth 90 billion euros, which will provide financial and military support for 2026-2027. We have also adopted the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, which limits its ability to wage war,” he noted.

As a reminder, the European Commission expects that the first funds under the new €90 billion loan package for Ukraine may arrive by the end of the second quarter of 2026.

By the way, the media reported that the new, 20th package of sanctions by the European Union will not contain a complete ban on the provision of maritime services to Russian vessels transporting oil and petroleum products.
