A 250-kilometer, five-month journey: a cat lost during a journey made its way from Spain to France on its own
A pet cat that went missing while traveling to Spain has returned to its owners in France on its own after five months. The animal traveled about 250 kilometers and was identified thanks to a microchip.
This is reported by Oddity Central .
French couple Patrick and Evelyn Cyr were returning to the town of Olonzac in the Hérault region in early August 2025 after a trip to the Ebro Delta in Spain. During a stopover in Catalonia, they briefly left the window of their camper open, when their black and white cat, Filou, apparently jumped out.
The owners noticed the animal missing only a few hours later, already in France. They returned to Catalonia, contacted local animal protection volunteers and filed a missing person report with the Guardia Civil, but the search yielded no results.
On August 19, 2025, a cat resembling Fila was seen near the same recreation area in Catalonia. The couple returned to the scene, but were unable to find the animal, and they eventually came to terms with the idea that the cat was gone forever.
On January 9, 2026, Patrick and Evelyn Cyr were contacted by a resident of the village of Gomps near Olonzac named Helen. She said that for about a month she had been caring for a cat that had appeared near her house, thin and emaciated.
Helen took the animal to the vet, where the microchip confirmed that the cat was registered to Patrick and Evelyn Sir. Although the phone numbers in the database were inactive, the address allowed them to track down the owners.
Patrick arrived in Gomps and picked up Phil, who was exhausted but otherwise in good health. How the cat managed to travel about 250 kilometers and cross the state border on his own remains unknown.
