A 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Indonesia, killing at least 38 people.

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Flores. At least 38 people were killed and dozens more were injured.

The earthquake occurred on the morning of August 15 at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers. Following the main shock, dozens of aftershocks were recorded in the region, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 6.1.

Local authorities said many of the dead were trapped under the rubble of their own homes while they were sleeping.

After the earthquake, authorities issued a tsunami warning, but it was cancelled approximately three hours later. Due to panic and the water receding from the coast, approximately 2,000 people voluntarily fled their homes and moved to safer areas.

Some residents still hesitate to return home due to fears of further tremors and remain outdoors.

According to preliminary data, the earthquake seriously damaged at least 54 residential buildings, five medical facilities, three religious buildings and a number of administrative buildings.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, including in remote mountainous areas. This could lead to an increase in the number of fatalities and injuries.
