On the morning of October 19, a high-profile robbery occurred in Paris: thieves stole nine jewels from Napoleon’s collection. The incident forced the Louvre to close for the day.

French Culture Minister Rachida Dati announced this on social media .

According to preliminary reports, the burglars entered the museum from the façade facing the Seine River, taking advantage of construction work in the area. They used a freight elevator to reach the Apollo Gallery, where the targeted exhibition was located.

After this, the thieves smashed the display cases and stole nine pieces of jewelry that belonged to the collection of Napoleon and Empress Josephine.

Police confirmed a break-in at the museum, but details about the stolen items are not being released. There were no injuries as a result of the incident.

The Louvre stated that the museum was closed “for exceptional reasons,” and investigators were on site. The investigation is ongoing.
