MMA star and former UFC champion Conor McGregor has announced his withdrawal from the race for president of Ireland.

This is reported by Sky News.

“After careful consideration and consultation with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race,” the athlete wrote.

According to him, it was not an easy decision, but the right one.

He stressed that he was “sincere and genuine” in his intentions to run for office, and was also “truly amazed” by the support he received.

McGregor was due to address Dublin City Council and Kildare County Council on Monday in a bid to be on the ballot in the October election. Under local requirements, he would have to be nominated by 20 members of the Irish parliament or four local authorities.

The fighter assured that the rules had become a “straitjacket” that stood in the way of “real democratic elections.”

“This democratic deficit, which arose against the will of the Irish people, has now been successfully amplified by my expression of interest,” McGregor noted.

He added that this is not the end, but only the beginning of his political activities.

McGregor previously announced his intention to run for president of Ireland , calling on citizens and local MPs to support his candidacy.
