A few kilometers from Finland: Russia is building a large military facility

Construction of a new large military base is underway in Petrozavodsk, Russia, near the border with Finland.

According to the Finnish publication Yle, work began in the spring of this year and about ten barracks are already being built on the site.

Satellite images show that construction is underway in a forest area a few kilometers from the city. Site preparation began at the end of last year, when large-scale felling of trees was recorded in the area of the future facility.

“Currently, the pace of work is significantly higher than during previous renovations of old military facilities in the region,” the material says.

According to journalists, more than 50 facilities are planned to be built in the new military town. Among them are barracks, residential buildings for the military, sports infrastructure, and auxiliary buildings.

Military expert Marco Eklund believes that the size of the new barracks indicates the intention to house a significant contingent of personnel there.

“Such infrastructure can be designed for several thousand military personnel,” he noted.

Experts estimate that the base could potentially accommodate between four and six thousand troops. It is possible that the facility could become a deployment site for new units that Russia is forming in Karelia near the Finnish border.

The appearance of such a military complex may indicate a further strengthening of the Russian military presence in the northwestern direction after Finland’s accession to NATO.
