On Monday, October 6, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recorded a series of powerful shelling in the area of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. The distance to the perimeter of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was only 1.25 kilometers, which is dangerously close to the strategic facility.
This was reported in an IAEA post on the social network X.
A statement from the agency’s director general, Rafael Grossi, noted that several series of both incoming and outgoing gunshots were recorded in the area surrounding the station.
“Two series hit 1.25 km from the perimeter of the station. The shelling increases the risks to nuclear safety at the ZNPP, which has been without external power supply for almost two weeks,” the report says.
As is known, the power units of the plant are currently in a “cold shutdown” state, and any damage to the infrastructure could have serious consequences for the region.
As a reminder, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been operating in standby diesel generator mode for over a week , which creates serious safety risks.
The Center for National Resistance previously warned that fuel shortages in the temporarily occupied territories pose a danger to the operation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.
At the same time, Energoatom emphasized that the Russian invaders are deliberately not restoring the station’s connection to external networks . A prolonged blackout at the ZNPP carries serious risks not only for Ukraine, but also for all of Europe, because such actions by the invaders could end in a nuclear disaster.
