Heavy snowfall in Indiana has caused a collision involving about 45 vehicles on a key highway, causing the westbound lanes of I-70 to be completely closed and temporarily restricted.

This is reported by NBC .

It is noted that the accident occurred on the I-70 interstate near the 15-mile mark, about 10 miles from the city of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Footage from the Department of Transportation’s surveillance cameras showed numerous vehicles scattered across the roadway. Some of the cars had pulled onto the side of the road and grassy areas.

Indiana State Police spokesman Matt Ames said the main collision occurred in the westbound direction, but vehicles were also seen leaving the road in the eastbound direction.

“People need to drive smart during snowfall – slow down, buckle up and be careful,” said Matt Ames.

According to preliminary data, 20 to 30 vehicles were involved in the accident, but this number was later revised to 45. There is no information about serious injuries.

The westbound lanes of I-70 are completely closed after the collision. Police estimate the closure could last for about 6 hours.

The US National Weather Service is predicting 1 to 4 inches of snow and wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour, making road conditions difficult throughout the day.

Recall that a large-scale road accident occurred in Herat province in western Afghanistan , killing at least 79 people, including 17 children. Most of the dead were on a bus carrying Afghan migrants deported from Iran.
