A major power outage occurred in Berlin on January 3rd due to arson at the Lichterfelde power plant, leaving about 45,000 households and over 2,000 commercial properties without power. Electricity and heat are expected to be restored by January 8th.
This is reported by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .
A large-scale power outage occurred in the southwestern part of Berlin. About 45,000 households and more than 2,000 businesses were left without power.
According to authorities, the cause of the outage was the arson of vital power lines on the cable bridge over the Teltow Canal leading to the Lichterfelde power plant.
Stromnetz Berlin reported that electricity supply was restored to 7,000 customers, but another 38,000 households and more than 2,000 commercial customers remain without power.
It is noted that full restoration of electricity and heating will take place by January 8.
Berlin police are investigating arson. The state security service has received a letter of confession, which is being checked for authenticity.
According to journalists, the left-wing extremist group “Vulkangruppe” claimed responsibility for the arson.
Supermarkets and many shops were forced to close due to a lack of electricity. The heating is also out, so temporary shelters have been set up in the city, including in local churches.
Police have increased patrols on the roads and installed light poles in some areas to ensure the safety of residents.
As a reminder, in April 2025, a large-scale failure occurred in the European power system, leading to massive power outages in Spain, Portugal, and parts of France. Millions of people were left without electricity, the metro stopped, traffic lights went out, and traffic in major cities was paralyzed.
