A logistics hub for Ukraine’s military needs will be opened in Romania: when will it be operational?

Romania will begin receiving and coordinating the transit of military aid to Ukraine within the framework of a newly established NATO logistics hub in January 2026. The new center will operate in parallel with the hub in Poland and should strengthen the Alliance’s capabilities to supply weapons to Ukraine.

It is noted that Romania will host NATO’s second major logistics center for the coordination and transit of military assistance to Ukraine from January 2026. This was announced by the Deputy Commander of NATO Assistance and Training Command Ukraine, General Mike Keller.
The new hub will operate in conjunction with the existing center in Rzeszow, Poland. Its creation is intended to provide a backup supply route and increase the resilience of the logistics infrastructure on NATO’s Eastern Flank.
According to General Keller, during 2025, the NSATU mission has already sent about 220,000 tons of military assistance to Ukraine. This involved about 9,000 trucks, 1,800 rail cars, and more than 500 strategic airlifts.
“The United States does not expect final payment before delivery begins. As soon as the PURL package is announced, the flow of materials begins immediately,” said General Mike Keller.
The material notes that the supply is carried out within the framework of the PURL mechanism, under which European states finance the purchase of weapons, and the United States ensures their production and transfer. This approach allows for the continuity of military assistance to Ukraine.
Until now, the main entry point for military cargo for Ukraine has been the Rzeszow base in Poland. Dependence on a single logistics hub created risks for the stability of supplies. The commissioning of the Romanian hub should reduce the load on the Polish direction and open a stable southern route.
The new center in Romania is expected to be under direct NATO command and integrated into the system for coordinating Ukraine’s military needs, including artillery, air defense, and electronic warfare.
The publication also notes that the launch of the hub coincides with the approval of the US defense budget for fiscal year 2026, which provides for the allocation of $800 million for the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This should ensure further financial support for the supply of weapons in the coming years.
