A major fire broke out at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex, killing two and injuring more than 130.

On August 25, a massive fire broke out at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in the Amur region. According to the latest reports, two people were killed and 133 others were injured, 19 of whom were hospitalized.

Russian media reported this.

Of those hospitalized, six are in serious condition, while another 13 are in moderate condition. It was previously reported that one of the deceased was a contractor employee and a Chinese citizen.

The fire broke out in an auxiliary process section of the pyrolysis plant. The company stated that the complex’s main equipment was not damaged, and the fire was contained.

Due to the accident, commissioning work at the plant was suspended. It is currently unknown whether the incident will impact the planned launch of polyethylene production in 2026 and polypropylene in early 2027.

Investigators have opened a criminal investigation into the accident for possible violation of industrial safety requirements.

The Amur Gas Chemical Complex is a joint project between Russia’s Sibur and China’s Sinopec. The complex’s design capacity is 2.7 million tons of products per year, including up to 2.3 million tons of polyethylene and 400,000 tons of polypropylene.
