A month in the post of Commander-in-Chief: what has changed in the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Mykhailo Drapatyy has already begun restructuring the military command system in his first month as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The main steps include changes in the eastern direction, new corps commanders, and preparations for updating the leadership of the Land Forces.

One of the key decisions was the creation of two new groupings of troops for the defense of the Donetsk region. The Lyman direction and the Kramatorsk-Konstantinovka agglomeration will be led by the commander of the 3rd Army Corps, Andriy Biletsky. Dobropillya and the territory southwest of the city will be responsible for the commander of the 1st Corps of the Azov National Guard, Denys Prokopenko.
At the same time, new commanders appeared in the 11th and 19th Corps. The 11th Corps was led by Emil Ishkulov, and the 19th by Valeriy Skred.
According to one of the officers, Drapaty’s main task now is to stop the offensive of Russian troops and distribute resources more rationally.
“Mykhailo Vasilyevich is gradually implementing his plan, which he came up with a month ago. Certain steps are being taken to restore order and rationally distribute resources,” a source close to the commander-in-chief explained to the publication.
At the same time, the personnel changes are not yet complete. Some of the candidates must be approved by the Office of the President. According to the publication, the process is being delayed due to checks and interviews.
Among the possible important appointments is a new commander of the Ground Forces. Drapatiy has proposed the commander of the 20th Corps, Svyatoslav Zaits, for this position. There is no final decision on his candidacy yet.
Separately, there is the issue of the Joint Rapid Reaction Forces. Their creation, which began under the previous leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has been suspended after the change of commander-in-chief. Several options are currently being considered for how exactly these forces should operate.
Despite the personnel and organizational changes, the main challenge for Drapaty remains the situation on the front. Russian troops continue to press on in the Donetsk region, and Ukraine is preparing for a possible reinforcement of the enemy in the fall.
“The main thing is that Ishkulov and Skred cope with this. But they will cope if they don’t just change commanders, but if the efforts of the Armed Forces are focused there and the commander-in-chief provides appropriate assistance,” one of the generals noted in a comment to the publication.
Thus, Drapaty’s first month in office was spent primarily on personnel decisions and restructuring of military administration. At the same time, large-scale changes are still underway, and their effectiveness will largely be determined by the situation on the front.

At the same time, in personnel policy, priority is given to professional and effective commanders.
