A new border crossing point to Romania has opened in Transcarpathia.

A new border crossing point to Romania has opened in Transcarpathia.

On October 8, a new automobile border crossing point, “Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației,” opened in Transcarpathia on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. Initially, it will only allow passenger vehicles to cross.

The Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine reported this.

To launch the checkpoint, an access road was built on the Ukrainian side and modular infrastructure for border and customs control was installed. Romania constructed a checkpoint and a new bridge across the Tisza River, connecting the two countries.

The opening was attended by Deputy Head of the Office of the President Viktor Nikita, Minister of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Zakarpattia Regional Department Myroslav Beletsky, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania Ionel Scrioştyanu, representatives of the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, border and customs services, and local communities.

The current launch is the first stage of the checkpoint’s development. Once fully operational, it is planned to process up to 400 trucks and 50 buses per day.

Nikolai Kalashnik noted that the new point will become an additional route to Romania and will help redistribute traffic flows.

“The opening of the new checkpoint is a concrete result of our systematic work to develop the western border. For Transcarpathia, this is an additional route to Romania, and for the entire transport system, it’s another opportunity to redistribute traffic flows and reduce the burden on existing checkpoints,” the minister stated.

According to him, the next step should be the creation of a full-fledged checkpoint for trucks and buses.

The new crossing is expected to become another route for Ukraine to the European Union and an additional opportunity for the movement of people and goods across the Ukrainian-Romanian border.
