A new page of cooperation: DPRK schools introduce a mandatory Russian language course

The DPRK has decided to make Russian a mandatory school subject, starting in grade 4. This decision is part of the expansion of humanitarian and educational cooperation between the DPRK and Russia.

North Korea has included Russian as a compulsory subject in schools from grade 4. The expansion of the curriculum comes amid increased bilateral educational initiatives between the DPRK and Russia.
According to the Russian side, about 600 people are currently studying Russian in the DPRK. Thus, it is included in the list of the 3 most common foreign languages in the country.
Interest in the Korean language is also growing in Russia. According to Moscow, 3,000 schoolchildren and about 300 students are studying it.
In 2024, 96 North Korean citizens enrolled in Russian higher education institutions. Another 29 people began studying geology courses in Russia.
Cooperation between the two countries also covers banking, energy, medicine, and geology. In the DPRK, construction of a center based on Kim Chol Ju University is underway, where Russian-language education is planned.
After the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, cooperation between the DPRK and Russia has intensified. The DPRK provides Russia with weapons and sends troops to participate in operations and demining of territories in the Kursk region.
In the summer of 2025, an increase in the flow of Russian citizens to North Korean resorts was recorded against the backdrop of the opening of direct flights by Russian airlines.
As is known, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un fully supports Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine, however, the benefits he receives for this are limited .
Recall that Seoul has received new, alarming intelligence. The information is that Russia has allegedly transferred a nuclear reactor for nuclear submarines to the DPRK . If the information is confirmed, this will mean a sharp increase in Pyongyang’s military capabilities and a dangerous precedent for violating international agreements.
It was previously reported that Russia is beginning cooperation with North Korea in the field of geology, in particular in the direction of uranium exploration. The state company Rosgeologiya, in cooperation with the Irkutsk National Research Technical University, is launching a program to train North Korean specialists.
