A new strain of COVID has reached Ukraine: what is known about “Cicada”

Ukraine has recorded the first case of the “Cicada” coronavirus subvariant, which belongs to the Omicron lineage. At the same time, the Ministry of Health assures that it currently does not pose an increased threat to the population.
This was reported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
According to the agency, the new subvariant was first detected in the world at the end of 2024. It has now been recorded in 23 countries.
“According to WHO estimates, the Cicada subvariant does not demonstrate signs of increased epidemic risk or the ability to cause a large-scale wave of morbidity,” the Ministry of Health noted.
In Ukraine, the case was confirmed by specialists from the Center for Public Health during genetic sequencing of the virus. The department emphasizes that such studies allow to detect new mutations and monitor changes in the virus.
The symptoms of “Cicada” remain typical of COVID-19: runny nose, fever, cough, headache, fatigue, loss of smell or taste, and sometimes eye irritation or rash.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that vaccination remains the main method of protection against severe disease and complications.
As a reminder, the World Health Organization has taken control of the new variant of the coronavirus BA.3.2, which has already been recorded in more than 20 countries around the world.
