A new threat looms over Europe: monkeypox has become resistant to drugs

European scientists are sounding the alarm: a new strain of monkeypox virus has been discovered in the UK, which combines two different strains and does not respond to existing drugs.
This is stated in the Daily Star article.
The patient has already been diagnosed – a tourist who returned from Asia. The head of the infectious diseases department of the British Health Security Agency, Katie Sinku, confirmed that the fact of the detection of the “hybrid” virus was confirmed by genomic testing.
The agency noted that the WHO was notified of the discovery. Experts emphasize that this strain can bypass existing testing systems and spread rapidly among people.
According to Bogumy Titanji, an associate professor of medicine at Emory University in the United States, this evolution of the virus is the result of the long-standing neglect of monkeypox problems in the world. If decisive measures are not taken now, the virus can quickly spread across the planet.
“The more the virus is allowed to circulate, the more it will strengthen and adapt, becoming dangerous to humans forever,” warns Titanji.
The British agency urged citizens to be careful, and people in risk groups to get vaccinated immediately. Doctors explain: vaccination is the only proven way to avoid a severe course of the disease.
Europe is seeing a sharp increase in infections with a new strain of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox. Unlike previous cases, the virus is increasingly being transmitted among people without travel to Africa and without confirmed contact with infected people.
As reported, UK health officials are sounding the alarm over a new mutated strain of flu spreading around the world.
