A powerful earthquake struck Japan: authorities have declared a tsunami threat

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Japanese island of Kyushu on July 28. After the main tremor, authorities declared a tsunami threat for coastal areas, and residents were urged to stay away from the coast.
This is reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and The Japan Times .
The earthquake occurred at 16:27 local time. Its epicenter was located in the Kumamoto prefecture area at a depth of 10 kilometers. The maximum intensity of the tremors reached 7 points on the Japanese seismic scale – this is the highest possible level. Approximately half an hour later, an aftershock with an intensity of up to 5 points occurred.
The earthquake was felt most strongly in Kumamoto Prefecture, as well as in the neighboring prefectures of Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, and Miyazaki.
A tsunami warning was issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas after the quakes. Meteorologists warned of the possibility of several waves and urged people to stay away from the coastline.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed relevant services to promptly assess the consequences of the disaster, organize rescue operations, and ensure that the population is informed.
According to Kyushu Electric, about 48,300 households in Kumamoto Prefecture were left without power. At the same time, inspections found no abnormalities in the operation of the Genkai and Sendai nuclear power plants, and radiation levels remained within normal limits.
Due to the earthquake, Kyushu Railway Company temporarily suspended all train services, including the Kyushu Shinkansen high-speed train.
The authorities are currently continuing to assess the consequences of the natural disaster. Information about possible victims and the extent of the damage is being clarified.
