A powerful explosion occurred at an oil and gas company in Hungary, killing several people.

An explosion occurred at a plant belonging to MOL , Hungary’s largest transnational oil and gas company.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced this.

According to him, one person died and several others were seriously injured as a result of the incident.

Energy Minister Istvan Kapitány and the company’s CEO , Zsolt Gernádi, went to the scene of the accident in Tiszaújváros .

MOL said the explosion occurred during the restart of the Olefin 1 unit at the MOL Petrolkémia facility.

“An explosion occurred during the restart of the Olefin 1 plant at MOL Petrolkémia’s Tiszaújváros facility. Firefighters contained the fire… Experts are investigating the circumstances of the accident,” the company said in a statement.

According to Telex , several fire crews and a mobile laboratory are on the scene. Eyewitnesses also reported the arrival of a rescue helicopter.

Tiszaújváros Mayor György Fülöp stated that there is currently no need to impose civil defense measures. He added that the authorities are in constant contact with rescue services and MOL management.
