As early as October 9, the Earth could be covered by a magnetic storm due to a coronal mass ejection that occurred on the Sun on October 6. According to forecasts from NOAA and the British Geological Survey, geomagnetic activity could reach the G2 level — a moderate storm.

This is evidenced by current space weather forecasts.

The coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred after a flare in an active region of the Sun. According to NOAA, the plasma cloud is moving towards Earth and is expected to arrive on October 9. The British Geological Survey is also predicting a G2 geomagnetic storm for that day.

No significant magnetic storms are expected on October 7 and 8. However, the situation may change dramatically on the morning of October 9. According to the NOAA forecast, the peak of activity is expected around noon UTC.

The storm is expected to be a G1 to G2 storm. Its strength will depend, in part, on how the magnetic field of the ejected plasma interacts with Earth’s magnetic field.

One of the most noticeable effects could be an increase in the aurora borealis. Under favorable conditions, it will be visible at lower latitudes than usual. However, the exact area of visibility will depend on the actual strength of the geomagnetic disturbance.

A G2 magnetic storm can primarily affect technical systems. Possible consequences include voltage fluctuations in power grids, problems with high-frequency radio communications, satellite navigation failures, and certain disruptions in the operation of satellites.

At the same time, for most people, such a geomagnetic storm does not pose a proven direct threat to health.
