A Russian tanker will be tried in Ukraine for shelling a house in Sumy region, which resulted in the death of a civilian

In Sumy region, an indictment has been filed against a Russian serviceman who, during the occupation of the region, ordered a tank to open fire on a residential building. A 61-year-old civilian died as a result of the shelling.

According to the investigation, the suspect is 34-year-old Russian serviceman Vyacheslav Izgrebin, who at the time of the full-scale invasion was serving in the 1st Tank Regiment of the 2nd Motorized Rifle Division of the 1st Tank Army of the Western Military District of the Russian Federation. He was a tank commander with the rank of senior sergeant.
Investigators established that on February 27, 2022, a unit of Russian military personnel was on a field road between the villages of Girne and Opolonske, Sumy district. At that moment, Izgrebin ordered the tank crew to fire a 125-millimeter gun at a residential building in the village of Stare Selo.
As a result of the detonation of a high-explosive fragmentation shell, a 61-year-old local resident, who was at the gate of his homestead, received fatal shrapnel wounds.
The suspect was identified with the assistance of the analytical department of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. In February 2026, the Russian serviceman was reported as suspected under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. After that, he was put on the wanted list.
The indictment was approved by the Sumy District Prosecutor’s Office and sent to court on April 30, 2026. The pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Sumy City Police Department No. 4 under the procedural guidance of the Sumy District Prosecutor’s Office. Operational support was provided by criminal investigation officers in cooperation with the Security Service of Ukraine.
